Three New Hires Join the SHPE FamiliaAugust 1, 2019
In his role as Marketing Coordinator, Darrell Appelzoller will focus on supporting and optimizing SHPE’s digital marketing programs, including creating and executing targeted campaigns, as well as, managing social media, email communications, the website, and general digital marketing activities.
As a former SHPE member with a background as an industrial engineer, Darrell is now a MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) trained and accomplished designer with a proven track record of thriving in a fast-paced, professional environment. His unique experience spans digital imaging, color management, graphic design, photography, branding, social media communications, and website management with a focused specialization in HTML, CSS, CMS, and Drupal. He has also done creative project management, graphic design, photography, video editing, and podcast production for the Smithsonian Institute.
Darrell is excited to be back in the SHPE Familia once again, and he’s passionate about leveraging his multifaceted professional skill set to help spread the word about SHPE and continue it’s accelerated growth.
Programs Manager, Technology and Innovation
Quest Moffat joins SHPE as Programs Manager, Technology and Innovation. He brings a wealth of knowledge from his 18 years of technology, innovation, and entrepreneurial experience with a focus on digital and physical product development and a passion for igniting growth in underserved populations.
As a social serial entrepreneur and impact investor, Quest specializes in software architecture, product development, and growth hacking. He has helped entrepreneurs to validate, launch, and scale their dream business ideas, with a focus on securing funding. Quest founded Project United Knowledge, a non-profit focused on helping underestimated founders launch their businesses. In that arena, he provides infusion support and helps minority and women-led startups to create new technologies and innovations that impact disconnected communities.
Quest has assisted over 55 founders to launch and scale their businesses. He has facilitated the collection of $2.5 million in early-stage non-dilutable capital for 22 businesses, and expedited raising angel or venture funding for three, one of which was acquired in three years.
Quest enjoys the art of being an amateur chef to family and friends. He has a unique passion for animals of all types and has four English Bulldogs. On any given day you can find Quest programming somewhere outside in the fresh air.
Career Services Manager
In this newly created role based out of Washington, DC, Zack is responsible for creating and strengthening mutually beneficial relationships between SHPE members and partner organizations that rely on a STEM workforce, managing all aspects of SHPE’s Career Services operations.
With 10+ years of academia, industry, policy, and non-profit organizations, Zack’s career as a STEM diplomat began as an undergraduate student at St. Mary’s University serving three summers as a near-peer mentor and instructor. Zack served as a process engineer at Southwest Research Institute before attending Baylor University for an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in biofuel sustainability. He was awarded the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship for his technical research approach to carbon management, which allowed him to accept three internships in upstream exploration projects at energy companies across Texas.
Zack moved to Washington D.C. in 2017 as a Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee facilitating the digestion and direction of research from National Labs and industry leaders for funding oversight, technology transfer, and policy promotion. While in D.C., Zack consulted with Great Minds in STEM developing STEM workshops that translated student’s education to real-world applications and careers. He also worked as a project manager with AGU’s Thriving Earth Exchange advancing solutions to address local climate change and natural resource priorities with community leaders and AGU scientists.
Zack aims to elevate and empower SHPE members and stakeholders to harness their capacity through equitable, accessible, and supportive leadership and career opportunities.
